We Love Our Volunteers!
We love our Volunteers!
MLA relies on our volunteer base for many things. Being a volunteer shows our kids that their educational experience is important, and teaches them about investing in our community.
The safety of our Meerkats has always been a top priority here at MLA, and that is why we ask you to keep up on your background check and training.
Be prepared: The Volunteer Approval process may take several days, especially if you have lived in another state or country within the last 10 years, so be sure to submit your application early! Once you are “cleared to volunteer,” you are good for three (3) years (expiration of clearance is always set to June 30, 3 years after you are cleared).
Review the MLA Volunteer Handbook: It is designed to answer questions, provide required information, and give guidance and direction to all volunteers. This handbook contains policies, procedures and work rules that are applicable to all volunteer programs. Additional work rules may be made available to you as part of your training and orientation to a particular location or volunteer duty. All volunteers should be aware they are serving Multnomah Learning Academy students, families, and staff. It is expected that all volunteers follow the rules and regulations of Multnomah Learning Academy.
Ready to Sign-Up? Complete an application online (Step 1 below) and continue to complete the additional steps as you wait for background clearance. For applications to be processed, your background information must be truthful and complete.
Step 1: Background Check Application
The Volunteer Background Application may take 14-20 business days to process, depending on District activities. The screening includes a national criminal history background check and, per Senate Bill 155 (SB155), a clearance verification for any reports of sexual misconduct and harassment. Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you as a volunteer; cases will be assessed individually.

The online training is approximately 30minutes and broken into manageable segments with progress tracked if you are unable to complete the videos in one set. An email will be sent from [email protected] with your temporary login information to the email provided in the Volunteer Application; check junk folder if not found within 3-5 business days after application submission.
At the end of your training you will receive a certificate of completion for you to download or print and submit to [email protected] (PDF, JPG, PNG).
Additional trainings may be required depending on areas of volunteer interest.
Mandatory Reporter Flier
The training takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and is broken into small segments if you are unable to complete it all at once. Your account username is your email; an email will be sent when your account is created.
Step 4: Review MLA Volunteer Handbook
Finally: Clearance Notification
You will be emailed a notification of "APPROVED" once your application is complete. If your email states "PENDING", please complete the requested steps as soon as possible.
